Flights ex-SE Asia are usually cheaper than the reverse. So if you're used to paying more than that go ahead and book it, but if you are flexible with your schedule and don't mind positioning, you can get fares around ~2k. Like these ones:

There are also occasional flash sales/mistake fares. Mistake fares are quite rare - last one I saw was BKK-LAX on ET for US$700 and that wasn't even honoured from what I can remember. As for flash sales, it's completely random, which I've seen regularly on QR. These fares normally price around ~1.5k.
