FWIW - I just dealt with a similar scenario on an ES Napa reservation using Points, and a certificate and running into a weekend.

I could book nights 1-3 for 70K each as a 3-night stay, or nights one and two individually - but night 3 was locked out as an individual night (so i had to make it three nights). Night 4 with the cert was only 52K individually, but because i had to use the 'three nights' combined to get that Saturday night, i was stuck using the certificate on the 52K night - costing me (in my mind) 18K points.
