It is not impossible to redeem long haul HKG - Europe (on both CX / BA)
Ok so here's a data point
HKG - LHR in J using Avios (14 Nov)
-BA award: 75k avios (off peak) + ~US$40
- BA partner CX award: 90k avios + ~US$40

Thanks. For HK-London it's a personal flight, so I generally fly economy. I get what you're saying, I'll do a redeem and see how that goes. Can't redeem a lot since I guess Avios can't be used much for Asia internal flights (other than HK-London of course)?
