Whipping this horse of a thread for the last little bit...
Some further insight into the situation:
The girl does look 14. She's at a point that she's very aware of her feminimity and of the opposite sex. They were without any male companions. The mom was reluctant to get any sort of confrontation going about the magazines, so that's why she didn't say anything. And no, she wasn't my daughter. I just happen to know her dad, who told me the story.
I found this thread quite interesting. It goes without saying that there's a wide range of morals, ethics, what people like and dislike, etc. in this community. But that's why we have morals, ethics and laws. To keep everything relatively civilized and members of society able to co-exist with each other. That fits into a broader theme of how people behave in the close confines of airplanes, trains, airports, etc. I see people both polite and impolite. And I can tell you, a little politeness and good behavior goes a long way towards making a trip tolerable for others.
It is also interesting to see society's overall push to consider children as adults and allow them access to the things that adults feel comfortable having and doing.
With my two sons, I run into similar situations, sometimes ones that I walked right in to without realizing the consequences. Imagine taking your two kids for a short stroll (on an overnight layover) around downtown Amsterdam at night without realizing just how pervasive the adult entertainment is around there. Whew, that took some navigating to keep things on an even keel. But that's also part of being a parent. But I also have dealt with loud, obscene conversations, drunks, and so forth around my kids. My kids don't need to experience that sort of behavior and they, most importantly, need to know that it isn't tolerated in public. I'm not raising a pair of overzealous, self-righteous, goody-2-shoes. Just two guys who know the right and the wrong way to act in public.
