Refund, check with Delta.

Your other alternative for this trip would be to buy (and use) an onward ticket from China to a third country (including hong kong or macau). The ticket to the third country would allow you to transit china withouth visa for either 72 hours or 144 hours (shanghai and regions).

You could sandwich your trip to a third country for a short holiday (such as Bangkok), and use transit withouth visa for the end bits. But you need to comply with the TWOV rules.
