Hi:

I currently have status on American Airlines. I have about 40,000 miles with United. I am moving to Singapore and will be flying Singapore air a lot. So I'm looking to gain status with a new group. I don't know how status works through Star Alliance partner airlines. Should I continue accruing miles through United, or should I join the Singapore program and gain status by accruing miles through them?

Another way to ask this is: if I get gold or platinum or whatever on United, will Singapore Air recognize it?

I also saw a sign at the gate in Tokyo about Star Alliance status. So it seems there are quite a few programs. Any help on what would be the best move would be appreciated.
