When speaking to BA agents about cancellations the best approach is to treat the conversation like a discovery process in advance of a court hearing (i.e. Don't assume useful information will be offered voluntarily - ask every question imaginable - "How much exactly will I be refunded if I were to cancel my ticket? Can I apply the value of the ticket for further travel? Can I cancel one PAX off the ticket without affecting the other PAX in any way?)
Also consider recording the conversation.
You will be eligible for a refund of taxes right up to the day of departure so no incentive for you to cancel the ticket early. Who knows, your travel companion's plan may change.
You could also take the
Elizabeth Gallagher approach!
