Personally, I don't think this is reasonable. I hardly see how AA is responsible for an LA technical/maintenance delay. If connecting in NYC was so important, you could have insisted with LA to maintain your LIM-JFK routing, and then worked with AA to change your NYC-ORD segment. I'm fairly certain that had you stayed on your delayed (noon departure) LIM-JFK flight, AA would have ultimately rebooked you to Chicago and you could have retained your NYC layover.

I see what you're saying, but there's no way to maintain a layover in New York without taking an additional day off work. I would get to New York at 9 pm, and i can't find a flight back to Chicago on the same day. It's just an unfortunate event I guess.
