I personally find it disgusting that a trade union would push for worker inequality, to wit, to push for a scheme that compensates workers based only on their age and seniority, instead of their actual contribution or usefulness.
A new hire worker in this industry is significantly more apt to be a more productive employee, take fewer sick days, and contribute more to the overall bottom line than the oldest employees, many of whom still struggle with computers, take more sick days on average, and cost the most in terms of defined benefit pension plan guarantees.
Any industry and/or union that insists on compensating employees based on a scheme of seniority, as opposed to the value an employer obtains for the specific task performed is due to run into these same problems sooner or later. The attitude that people should be paid more just because they are old is disgusting, and is part of the cancer that is at the root of the productivity rot we've been experiencing in Canada.
