I got hit with the equipment swap on SYD-LAX leg of a SYD-LAX-DFW-TPA award ticket when it switched from 77W to 789. Recently space opened up on QF so I changed the routing to SYD-DFW-TPA. This was a fee free change because the origin and destination stayed the same.
Just tried to call AA and use the equipment swap on the original routing as justification to waive the change fee and add a MEL-SYD leg to the front of the ticket. Two different agents told me no go because I already "accepted" the schedule change.
Is this correct? Already HUCA'd once so wanted some more feedback before calling again.
Yes it's definitely correct, nothing about the change entitles you to fee-free change of origin (adding rather than subtracting in doing so.)
