Yes it might have been smarter than all the others that were available at that time but was it really smart? Even then?
If any one was designing a seating arrangement 20 years ago or today you wouldn't choose a design where you were forced to looking at the person next to you in that way would you... so I don't think it was smart when it was designed back then or if it were designed now.
I accept it was a big improvement over the previous style and in that respect it was a success... but it wasn't a good design IMO... even then... it was just better than everything else!
