I agree that it can be uncomfortable facing a with the divider down, - I've experienced the full gamut from far too friendly to downright hostile. This is when a newspaper, a book or a puzzle is useful.
But I've occasionally had some interesting / entertaining / informative conversations. But I am also quite capable of saying "it's been nice talking with you but I need to get some sleep / do some work / finish this book / watch _________ (movie title of choice)". I can also just press the button!
