Not sure about upgrade status; but, I've been able to call in once or twice and have family traveling with me on their own PNR sit in E+ with me. This was on a single cabin plane and we all have the same last name.
The only time I was told no E+ was when I was in F and my friend was in E; but, she did mention if I was in E+ it would have been fine.
