That's always been the plan since the order for the A359ULR was placed — question is whether UA's announcement will force SQ to start the route earlier (with an ordinary A359) instead. Personally I think they have no choice but to do so (as with the SIN-SFO announcement last year)
I wonder if it really made sense to disclose plans almost 2 years early. In this cutthroat competition, is it really worth alerting your competitors so early?
At best the only people who might benefit are those miles redeemers who book one year ahead - they'd wait for the availability to open on the direct route. Revenue passengers, especially corporate travellers are not going to book even 6 months ahead.
