AMS-HKG-TYO on CX can be a reasonable deal. You have to add a positioning flight to AMS; if you have checked bags, CX should check bags through to a BA flight AMS-LON on the way back but of course BA won't through check to CX on the way out.

JAL is rarely the cheap option, I'm afraid.
