Does bringing a guest into United Club raise membership rate?

I have a United Club membership through the United Club Visa card, which allows two guests with my access. While checking into the United Club at DFW, a man with United Gold was turned away because he was not flying internationally. So I offered for him to be my guest and he accepted. FWIW, this is the first time I have done this, as the opportunity hasn't really presented itself before.

After he walks away, one of the agents whispers to me "That was a nice gesture what you did, but be careful because bringing guests can raise your rates." Now, the annual fee for the card has been $495 for the last 4 years I have had it. I have never heard anything about the fee being increased because of bringing in guests too frequently. Has anyone heard something like this before? What was she talking about? Normally I would ask her what she meant, but her tone made me feel a bit sheepish.
