`did you ask them how they calculated 5percent of a zero rate ?
Yes, and the response was a typical German guy saying "the computer says you have to pay it so you must pay". I also did say in my first post on this thread "nobody could explain how they calculated that 10000 points converted to 60 euros".

That particular hotel was a bit odd. They put a plate of fruit in the room and then charged me for it later (which Amex refunded) and there were other issues, so maybe they also do something odd with the tax, but I can't be bothered to look up their paid rates now since it went on my no-stay list.

As I also said already, "other hotels in Berlin have not charged me any tax on reward stays."

I have stayed at (non-IHG) hotels where taxes were demanded on check-out despite having pre-paid the rate. I presume this is because no tax would be payable if I didn't show. Regardless of paid or points, I don't get annoyed if the amount is clearly advertised when booking (as it is on the Hilton app), or even if they tell me at check-in, perhaps with an explanation.

I did get annoyed with the Hampton by Hilton Amsterdam Centre East because I thought they pre-charged the tax-inclusive amount but they actually hadn't, instead DCC-scamming me for an amount similar to the tax due.
