There are 3 airports in New York and 2 in Toronto.
In NYC I would prefer JFK (I have almost-direct subway access), but LGA has the best availability (I prefer pre-7AM flights so that I can get into the office by 9) so that's where I expect to be. On the Toronto end that seems to always mean YYZ.

Over in the Central Terminal, you have a choice of three lounges (assuming you have the AMEX Platinum card?)
- Air Canada;
- United Club Lounge;
- AMEX Centurion Lounge (my PF!).
Recently, I took the MTA to Central, spent two hours in the AMEX lounge, and then took the purple shuttle over to the Delta Terminal. Very do-able.
Another advantage of AC option? Due to LGA const'n, they will change your ticket for free to EWR.
The PP lounge at LGA is the MLL if I'm not mistaken, both in the central terminal. I have a complementary PP membership through my CSR, no Amex. Unfortunately the central terminal lounges are pre-security so I'm not sure how useful given that they usually open around the time I'm boarding as I usually take early flights out of LGA. That said, my WS experience at LGA has been very pleasant and I much prefer the Delta terminal experience there in general as well.
