I picked up a rental from a SF city location earlier today. The fuel tank in the car was half-full and the attendant told me to return the car with half a tank of fuel. As I was embarking on a road trip, I went to put in about $27 worth of fuel immediately after getting the car.

I would much prefer to fill the car up to the maximum before returning it, since it is much easier. Should I return the car with a full tank, will the staff at Alamo SFO be willing to refund me (in cash) the initial half a tank of fuel which I put in the car? I have the receipt with the timestamp showing that I put in $27 worth of fuel in the car immediately after collecting it.
