The hiring requirements for screeners posted on this board make it clear that someone without a high school diploma but with one year's experience as a security guard can qualify. I have thought about this in recent days and have watched the "security" guards at the local Walgreen, Safeway and BestBuy as I have gone about my errands. One year of standing around doing nothing requiring any thought or skill is not a substitute for a GED or high school diploma, IMO. Two years would be worse!

But this is all beside the point. I am not biased. I came to my conclusion about the ratio of bright to not so bright in the TSA from repeated contact and my own observations.
I know from personal experience that there are bright, capable ones.

I know from personal experience that there are too, too, too many who are very dim indeed. Aside from the hassle to passengers that comes of placing people with insufficient intelligence and training to think is such positions, it is sheer delusion to imagine that they are equipped to out-smart or detect a clever terrorist. The whole thing is an expensive boondoggle, IMO.

I have no reason to want to assume ill of anyone. I would rather it were different. Minor and sometimes major incidents of outright stupidity occur to me or around me at least 25% of the times I go through screening.
