BA are not obliged to pay for flights independently booked with alternative carriers. Nothing to stop people claiming but there is no guarantee, I'm sure they will take a pragmatic view on case by case basis. For example, someone paying £180 to fly to DUB would probably be reimbursed as it saved BA paying for hotel accommodation, however someone paying £900 to travel to OPO is very unlikely to be reimbursed.
