I think that is basically in line with the advice given on this thread, at least from c-w-s.

Whether they would be forced to pay the extra if you took them to CEDR / through the courts is a different matter. It's a grey area. But as far as BA's policy goes, self-rebooking on other airlines during disruption is at your own risk.
