1) They would provide that as an option, but your colleague does not have to agree to that. Naturally, if he does not then he may incur delays. Did he request PE with AF/LH/AC or just accept the first choice given to him?
2) The expenses of going to and from the airport, but nothing else.

My brother-in-law was scheduled on BA177 from LHR to EWR, which never left. My wife, parents-in-law and I were on BA185 to EWR which managed to squeeze out of LHR 2 hours late, before everything caved in.
My brother-in-law has bought a brand new return ticket on UA, leaving tomorrow as he is joining us for family celebrations and got nothing but hold music from BA. His BA booking was likely made via a T/A to make things even more complicated.
Questions:
* What are the chances of BA either covering the UA ticket cost, or refunding the original BA trip?
* I'm not able to confirm if BA185 is eligible for EU261 compensation as I'm not sure what time we left stand at LHR, or arrived on-stand at EWR. Is anyone able to confirm the timings and whether we qualify for any compensation?
1) I think that BA reps have been given the power to refund trips if people no longer wish to take them. But I doubt that they would cover the cost of the UA ticket.
2) Gate departure was 12:13. Gate arrival was 14:30. So no EU261 compensation.
