Traditionally BA have been reluctant to pick up the bill for those who self help themselves, so if you went via AA I wouldn't be comfortable in saying you'll get that covered. So in your shoes, I would plug away at the contact centres, or alternatively - assuming some return to normality tomorrow - go to LGW and see what you can sort out in person there.
Thanks for your help. I have just been booked on the LHR-JFK-CUN so its all sorted for now. It is a shame that it took 3 calls to do it. I could have got an all AA booking if the first person who took my call had been able to rebook me onto AA. As it stands, we are on BA service from LGW-JFK and fingers crossed, it sorts itself out by tomorrow. ^^
