The 777 is configured with a W cabin but W is not sold on short haul flights. If you are purchasing B class, you should be able to pick these seats at booking (the 2-4-2 section). Otherwise if you are STE+ you may be given these seats at check-in.
I wound up buying the tickets with a combo of Chase UR points and cash. So, thanks for the advice!
I tried getting a seat in W, but the CI agent on the phone said that the entire section is not available. I asked to be seated in the bulkhead section or even exit row in Y. Not available. She saw the same seat map that I saw online: a lot of open seats in the back but not the ones that one would desire. I asked her what "preferred seating" was available for STE+ pax (like me). She said that no such seats/sections existed.
Have you (or anyone else) had any success getting "upgraded" at check-in? (I realize that it's just a nicer seat with identical Y food and service.)
