Sometimes you get the option of "minutes and text" vs. "data" (I forget exactly, but something like that) when registering the app. Otherwise, you can go into settings and pick data.

How were u able to get data to work on the digits phone? With mine I get 4 bars for calling but no data (3g sign, etc) signal.
