I know the rule is that, if I do not board at Dublin, then the ticket is cancelled, so my question is more of:
If by bad chance my flight to Dublin (from UK) is delayed by over 3hrs, which means I would miss my Dublin-->---LAX flight (UK to DUB = own ticket), could I make my way to London Heathrow which is where the 2nd Leg starts, and pay the difference in cost ?
No, and that is why it is recommended to give yourself plenty of time when flying ex-Dublin. If you no show for the flight DUB-LHR, the whole lot is cancelled.

The BAEC forum has plenty of information on doing this. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/briti...ic-thread.html
