We've already booked a week in Ptown in July, and are now wondering whether we should get hitched there... we've been tentatively planning our civil partnership in the UK, assuming the legal change goes through early next year, but the temptation of a real live "marriage" might be too tempting...
I do think it's astonishing how far we have come... I was explaining the vagaries of UK inheritance tax for gay couples to a colleague, and she was shocked and horrified at how inequitable it was... but, on the other hand, in Europe I can no longer be sacked for being gay, bars I like are no longer likely to be raided, and we can check in to a hotel and ask for one bed without too many eyebrows being raised... I never ever thought in my lifetime that the state would recognise my relationship.
Anyway, I suspect we won't marry in MA (and I'm still not sure as non-US citizens we would even be able to) but I'm sure it means that Ptown and Boston will be even more fun places to visit.
Congratulations to everyone marrying in MA today and in the future, and every one of us should celebrate the progress being made - while recognising that marriage, and indeed monogamy, are not necessarily for everyone but the opportunity to marry remains a huge step forward.
