Was Hampton Inn within their rights? I'm not a lawyer, but I am going to guess yes.
Was it a smart thing to do? No - absolutely not. It probably makes you less likely to visit Hampton Inn and more likely to visit a competitor. It demonstrates short-sightedness on the part of that hotel and the inability to think through a situation and arrive at a decision that makes the most sense for both the customer and the business.
Sorry to hear that it happened that way - hope the Holiday Inn was nice...
