The satellite they've chosen to use only has CONUS coverage. The theoretical LiveTV coverage is slightly worse than the yellow contour (18" antenna) shown here:

Last month on SFO-SJD, we had DirecTV nearly halfway down the Baja. IIRC, it cut out near Loreto. But, on LAX-OGG, it quits fairly early on in the flight (maybe 5-10 minutes out over the water).
Those experiences are both in line with the best possible outcome.
