I typically book via my corporate travel tool, which allows me to book up to a Compact (bleagh). I would hope that my Five Star status would let me get Intermediate cars or perhaps select something from Gold Choice, but have never found a way to do so. Do I need to stop at the counter? Call in advance? Find the right pages on the website or mobile app?

Thanks in advance!

You shouldn't have to do anything.

That said, this is Hertz. Expect very little and you shall still sometimes be let down.

Some background:

What appears on their screens when you book with your Five Star number is a box with several lines of text, one of which says something to the effect of ONE-CLASS SPACE AVAILABLE UPGRADE COMPLIMENTARY UP TO FULLSIZE.

The person who processes your rental agreement and assigns your car should see that and take care of it if there are upgraded cars available, but a) they're human and it's possible to not notice the note and b) there often aren't cars available for complimentary upgrade.

I'm PC now, but when I was 5*, I really didn't get upgraded very often, and whenever I asked, they indicated they didn't have anything for me at the moment. As a PC, that note now says ONE-CLASS GUARANTEED UPGRADE COMPLIMENTARY UP TO FULLSIZE (or something like that) and my percentage is much better.

So, basically, you shouldn't have to do anything, but you also shouldn't expect much. If you really do want a bigger car, it probably wouldn't hurt to pop into the Gold booth and say, "Hey, I'm a 5* and I was wondering if you had anything you can upgrade me into, since it looks like my complimentary upgrade benefit wasn't applied here" or something. A gentle reminder that you do get one if it's available might be fruitful.

I am unaware of any ways to do anything through the website or app to take advantage of the upgrade benefit.
