To clarify, the diamond desk at Delta booked the entire ticket including the HA portion. It was diamond that told me that points could not be used on the return leg OGG-HNL only the pure Delta legs. When I had the issue trying to check in is when I called the Diamond line and they were on the phone with HA. Delta acknowledged it was their coding error at reservation but FC was sold out at check-in.

As far as me switching seats with my wife, absolutely, provided that the airline allows it (See Delta May 2-3 flight from Hawaii to California when family forced off of flight).
DL made an error. However the May family issue has zero to do with ticketed passengers switching seats. the child was not ticketed and was trying to use another passengers ticket to get a seat.
