I've had this happen with Delta at ATL- original delay estimate for mechanical reasons followed by reducing the estimate by 30 minutes because they found another plane to substitute.

Said replacement sky chariot was two terminals away and according to the board at the gate was still supposed to be the 6:00am flight to Biloxi the following morning, so if you missed the original GA announcement of the relocation and caravan to the new plane, you were probably out of luck.
