Yep. Southwest does this-- the instant the first boarding pass is scanned there is an automatic push notification to the app that the flight is boarding. No reason AA could not do this as well.

Slightly OT I once left the airport and went to a coffee shop upon finding out my flight was to be delayed 3 hours due to late inbound plane. Came back 2.5 hours later and they were paging me... to give me a voucher! They had given vouchers to everyone as a customer service gesture due to the long delay and were confused why I hadn't picked mine up.
