It's on the airline regardless. They are supposed to check your ticket/BP on boarding. If the gates are confusing, it's on them to either remedy the situation or have additional checks to double check the BPs.
Not to mention the passenger count was off and both the GA and the FA's were aware. I've had two QX flights in the last couple of months where my BP scan errored out as already on board. Both times the GA said it was something he did and just on aboard.
