If the gates have completely separated jetways then this is on Alaska. Boarding cards are scanned at the gate and you shouldn't be able to go down the jetway if it doesn't match your boarding card.
If it's two gates that feed into one jetway down to the tarmac (like the C2 gates at SeaTac), passenger's at fault.
It's not uncommon in the US though.

It's on the airline regardless. They are supposed to check your ticket/BP on boarding. If the gates are confusing, it's on them to either remedy the situation or have additional checks to double check the BPs.
This is not a train where you just get on whatever train you want and surrender your ticket or buy one when you get going.
