Would there be any problems for UA or NZ to check my bags through from SFO to Australia if buying two separate tickets?

I know UA and *A will do it for flights to Europe but wanted to make sure they do the same for the Australia flights.

Likewise, if I fly NZ back (MEL-AKL-LAX), will they check it back through for the LAX-SFO flight? I know I will have to reclaim the checked luggage at LAX but as long as I can re-check it instead of dragging it from the international to the domestic terminals?
