I hope the rules have been changed, or perhaps the stopover must be purchased prior to flying the first leg. In 2003 I was not allowed to add a stopover to the return leg and ran into the problem of needing LHR-LIS inventory for the transatlantic date. I suppose Europe-based travelers would always buy a stopover at LHR for the return so this isn't really an issue (except for adding to the fare cost).
