Yep. I'd flip the sequence in the first scenario, though - book the new reservation
first, then go back and cancel the old one. That way you know you have the ticket at the new lower price. The duplicate itinerary auto-cancellation utility isn't real-time from all reports I've seen, so you shouldn't have a problem in that regard.
