I've never seen AC staff check but I have seen the employees at the security gate tell pax to put the "carry-on" in the little metal frame thing under the sign that says "YOUR BAG MUST FIT HERE".
But never AC staff. It happens at Heathrow.
I once was lining up at LHR and there was a stand with AC to check sizes and tag all approved bags.
There was a big pile of red approved tags and no AC staff. No prizes for guessing how that went.
This was just once though, and I think it was a year or two ago. The only airline to give me grief remains FI. And that was indeed at LHR.
So yeah, YMMV. My advice? Take a second bag that you can empty anything expensive and battery based into. Saved me on the DL Z5 issue, I had the bag rammed into the roller for use while I was in AUS.
Also helps if someone steals a backpack.
Oh and I only saw AC complain once when the bloke had SIX bags and was asked "And which if these at you checking sir". I've also seen them gate check a late boarding pax who couldn't fit it in after making it on board.
