Your last sentence hold the key. Just because a bag CAN hold a ton, doesn't mean you should overstuff it. I learned the hard way that weight is paramount. I never let any of my packs get over 15lbs, thus the straps aren't super important to me (unless they are just horrible). I've always said, if you need a hipbelt, you've packed too much stuff!
