If you want to maximize earning on SkyTeam, consider routing through FCO on AZ, MPM exceptions allows this to work at least for LAX/SFO and the fare allows I class on AZ, which earns significantly more miles.
However, note that AZ is bankruptish, so if you take this option, probably plan to fly it ASAP, or have a credit card that will reimburse you for the ticket. Edit: But, if you can add at least one segment on DL (and it can be a short one like LAX-SFO, and convince DL.com to price this, then DL will issue this on 006 ticket stock and thus be on the hook if AZ goes away).
