BA allow free seat assignments for Gold and Silver card holders from time of booking, for Bronze from 7 days before the flight and for everyone else from 24 hours before flight
Outside those timescales it is pay to reserve (apart from F)
It was not clear from the initial post whether they were unable to pay to book seats because it was a group booking
