Is it that complicated to protect connecting passenger arriving late on a later flight but keep their seat on the original flight, and at the end of boarding offload passenger who did not make it and give seat to wait-listed passenger ?

BTW when it happened to me I am pretty sure the flight was actually overbooked and it was the occasion to bump someone without paying IDB compensation...
