If the kids might enjoy the beach and playing in the sand, my recommendation is to take the 7 am flight (think of it as 4 pm in Rome) and at JFK take the SkyTrain to Howard Beach and then the A line to Rockaway Beach on Jamaica Bay. That takes no more than 30 min each way and is a good way to keep small kids happy for a few hours.
