Not an Alaska elite, but when i fly them i tend to look for U space like a hawk in the 24 hours before the flight and then snag it via paid upgrade by checking in. I feel a little bad, as i do often see people on the upgrade list at the airport and wonder if I snagged an upgrade out from under them...
