These 2 images are what the PlatePass housing looked like if renting from Hertz - notice the velco on the outside of the box, the entire housing is mounting on the front windshield; and, Hertz transfer the unit among their rental cars.

Last Fall, when I rented from LE in Little Neck, NY (saved $$ instead of going to LGA as it was a weekly minivan rental) -they didn't have one mounted and was going to pull another unit; then, realized as I told them I am using my own - they said that would be fine. On another occassion, I picked up a sedan for the weekend that came with one mounted - the manager on duty said to just put the entire housing/unit inside the glove box, the shielding will block it from being read & my own EZP sticking to "their" velco strip on the front windshield would work.

In our own personal vehicles, the EZP is mounted high & behind the tinted front windshield band above the rearview mirror - none of the toll agencies that we've driven thru (including those high-speed ones on the GSP or NYS Thruway, etc. without slowing down to 15 mph ... like NYC tolled crossing) had been read & billed correctly 100% - no billing errors or notices in the mail, nor the gated toll barrier not going up as we approach & slowed down.

Mounting it at the recommended position below the tinted line would most definitely not be an issue with the tags not being read. Those that "hide" their EZP and hold them up as they approach the toll crossing had, from what I've seen, problems with the tag not being read & the gate not swinging up, requiring someone to come & manual scan/bar-code read their tags to override & raise the gate/barrier for the vehicle to go forward ... with honking drivers lined up behind them.
