HAL wants us to walk past as many shops as possible.
The new airport definition is 'a shopping center with runways attached'.
Airports like Heathrow are large, with a considerable amount of walking involved and this is made worse than necessary by the airports owners desire to take us past as many shops as possible.
In that case they've rather shot themselves in the foot - the door used to be a useful way to pop out from the CCR to the upper level shops - not sure I'll be bothering going up there anymore if I have to start traipsing halfway round the terminal to get there.
