Surpringly a very good stay

Introduction I am a hard-core Accorhotels loyalist. But when there are non, you have to look elsewhere. We decided to spend a night accross the border in Johor over the Vesak holidays and I was browsing the properties available. It was down to the Doubletree, the Jen hotel, or the Renaissance. As I know Johor well and drive anyway, the location of the Renaissance wasn't a problem. The Jen was asking for rates which for Johor I couldn't justify and the Doubletree was too much "in town" and I was worried about potential traffic (which didn't materialise). Was lucky too in that I submitted a LNF rate I found on booking.com and thus managed to score two Club Rooms at MYR342.00 - a steal in my opinion. Check In Driving up to the hotel you think you have made the biggest mistake. The hotel looks run down and almost disgusting from the outside. A white building with mold all over. Having read reviews online I knew better of course - bust still, for a nice interior, why can't they spend some money to paint the exterior.Dropped off the family and parked the car. Parking is free (as it is in all hotels in Malaysia).Check-in could only be done at the lobby. No lounge check-in.I had forgotten to request for interconnecting rooms. So when we got to our floor (16th floor - also where the lounge is) I noticed this and went back down. They had troubles finding a interconnecting room and out of curiosity I asked what it would cost if they were to upsell us to a Jnr Suite, interconnecting to one of the standard club rooms. I was quoted MYR280 and took that. A good choice IMO. Room We were alocated 1124 and 1125 (the Jnr Suite 1125). The room is very large with a round dining table, espresso machine, large 4 seater couch + single seater, a very large table and a small toilet. Bedroom had another lounge chair and the king sized bed. I found the bed to be a bit hard - still prefer the Pullman beds. Bathroom was huge with a bath, shower cubicle and toilet. Overall it looked very nice and most importantly the family was happy. Service What sets this hotel apart from the Pullmans and Novotels I typically stay at is the excellent service here - in a secondary city. Don't get me wrong: I also get good service in most Accorhotels in major cities, but the standards do drop when you venture "out". The Renaissance Johor has service down pat. Dining The lounge is located on the 16th floor and has a nice view over the straits of Johor and into the northern part of Singapore. We had a beautiful sunset and very much enjoyed our afternoon canape there.Staff in the lounge always ready to assist or to whip up something special. Nothing is too much to ask. The breakfast spread in the main restaurant is HUUUGE. From a BBQ station ( for breakfast!) to Roti Canai or Dhosai, from Dim sum to cooked oats, from freshly squeezed fruit juice to teh tarik - all is available. We spent 1.5 hrs having an excellent breakfast - needless to say, we skipped lunch. Location Location isn't centre of town and nothing much to do within walking distance. Lots of local shops, but nothing touristy. If drive out the main road, then turn right under the bridge, towards the sea - and at the end of the road turn left and drive for abot 2km you end up by the waterfront with a row of very nice local restaurants selling seafood over the water. Our prefernce is a reswtaurant called "Nr6". But for all of that and to venture out, you need a car, call a taxi or uber. Overall I was very surprised by this property and we throughly enjoyed our stay. And we will certainly return.
