Per the link above to the NY EZ Pass site, you're not supposed to add rental car info to your account.

I suppose the risk the tag is not read (assuming you don't neglect to mount it or hold it up), is probably smaller than the risk you forget to un-register the car and someone else violates the toll and it gets billed to you.
